James IV Weekend

Join us as we mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of King James IV at (probably) Stirling Castle. We are celebrating with a full programme of themed tours and Living History performances from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 March. Guided tours will look at the life of James IV and the King’s Old Building and its transformation since he inhabited the building. Meet our musketeer in the Queen Anne Garden, see the armour used on the battlefield at Flodden and hear about the royal nursery in our Royal Palace.
Friday 17 March until Sunday 19 March
11.30am and 1.30pm – James IV and Stirling Castle
A themed guided tour will start in the Outer Close and highlight James IV’s associations with the castle. The tour will consider the King’s childhood, his rebellion against his father, James III, and his patronage of the arts and sciences enabling him to preside over a glittering royal court at the castle.
12.30pm until 2.30pm: The Secrets of the King’s Old Building
A guided tour of the King’s Old Building, once James IV’s royal lodging at the castle. Meet at the entrance to the King’s Old Building.
Saturday 18 March and Sunday 19 March
11am, 12pm and 2pm – Firing the musket
Our musketeer will demonstrate an early 16th century musket, including a live firing, in the Queen Anne Garden.
1pm and 3pm – Arms and Armour
Discover the armour that tells the tale of the battle of Flodden in 1513 with our costumed interpreters in the Great Hall.
All day - Bringing Up Royal Babies
The royal governess are waiting for you in our Royal Palace to tell you how royal babies were dressed and looked after in the 15th and 16th centuries at the castle.
